The fascinating encounter with the humpbacks
Every day is a new experience

Life in open sea is really fascinating. I already loved being at sea, and I had no doubt that when I received the invitation to work as a stewardess I would feel at home.

Every day is a new experience and one of the most amazing moments happened in 2015. We were sailing along the Australian coast, through the Whitsunday Islands, when we were surprised by a group of about 10 humpback whales. They measured around 15 meters, about half size of our boat. I thought it was curious how they kept circling us, never heard any stories like that. Perhaps they were attracted by the sound of the stabilizers, which can sound like another whale.

They stayed with us for an hour, long enough for one of the crew members have courage to jump in the water – of course I lacked that courage. While they danced around and under the yacht, I simply enjoyed every minute admiring them and I was just glad to be there for that unique and unforgettable moment.

It was beautiful too see them jumping out of the water as if they wanted to reach the sky. Undoubtedly, this was the most beautiful spectacle of nature that I’ve ever seen.

Yes, I do regret not jumping in the water with them. I already swam with sharks, but I did not dare to fall into the water with the family of humpbacks! Maybe next time, for now, the moment is saved in my memory and in my soul.
